During these final days of August I am reminded of that wonderful Staple television commercial that has the parent pushing the shopping cart through the store with the Christmas music “Its the most wonderful time of the year...” playing in the background and two young children trailing behind the parent looking as though they have black clouds over their heads. This is a time when parents are happy to have their children heading back to school and it is the time that kids dread most.
But, in truth, the students are excited to return to school, they just don’t know it!
They will get to socialize with their friends daily, eat lunch with them, join sports teams and clubs at school, tackle very complex and difficult problems and socialize with their friends and compare notes… on the new boys or girls in school… wait, let’s get back to the learning.
This is a time of new beginnings, clean slates, the first day of the rest of your life and it is a time to resolve that whatever it is that you undertake you will do so with gusto and a zest for life and learning that whatever happened last year won’t matter. There will be new routines to learn, new teachers to get to know, in some cases new schools to acclimate with. It is truly a new beginning for our students and they do have the power within them to make this the best year ever.
So, while that television commercial may be humorous to some, it does have a great meaning for all of us. This opportunity to begin again and make the most out of the next 40 weeks, or so is one of the wonderful benefits of our lives. It is not very often that we have such a demarcation between ends and beginnings, this is a great chance for all to have a wonderful year… if we choose!
