A printed sheet of the following information was sent home with our students today.
Gorham Middle School’s New After-School Library Hours.
As the school year begins we want you to be aware of an exciting change we are making in the after-school schedule for our building library. Sometime in September the GMS library will be open, and supervised, for middle school students only, on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday afternoons until 4:00. The library will be staffed by professionals from the middle school who will assist students with homework, provide direction for research, or just provide a place for quiet study for those who need it. Students who use the library on those days will be given late bus passes to allow them transportation on the late bus which leaves GMS at 4:00 pm.
PLEASE NOTE: Because of this change, Baxter Library will no longer issue bus passes to students from the middle school.
When middle school students attended Shaw Junior High School it was very easy for them to walk to Baxter Library, complete their work, and get a late bus pass to go home. Today, the distance between GMS and the downtown library makes it far more difficult for our students to use their time wisely as the travel time cuts down on the time for homework or research. By opening the GMS library, and dedicating staff to assist students with their work, we believe that we are accomplishing several positive changes. First, our students do not have to walk the distance downtown. Second, students will have access to materials, teachers, and other professionals as they work on their studies. And finally, we believe that we are increasing the security for our students and their families by providing oversight for our students at this very important time of their lives.
We realize this is a change, and that is why we are informing you again as the school year begins. As always, if you have any questions please feel free to call the school at 222-1220.
